Description
Melatonin
is a type of hormone secreted in the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain. It controls the sleep-wake cycle and the internal clock (biological rhythm). Apart from helping you fall asleep, melatonin has many other benefits. In early childhood, melatonin levels are quite high, so babies sleep a lot, after which melatonin synthesis begins to decline. By the age of 40, relatively enough melatonin is produced. Then, due to stress, irregular and unhealthy eating, falling asleep very late at night and a number of other reasons, this synthesis decreases. This is one of the reasons why older people do not sleep well.
Melatonin and sleep:
- The main benefit of melatonin is in sleep disorders - insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, short sleep.
- Prevents sleep disorders during travel and time zone change.
Melatonin in migraine:
Studies have shown a positive effect of melatonin on migraines and headaches. Those who regularly receive melatonin are less prone to migraine attacks.
- Melatonin calms the nervous system and fights depression.
- It has a therapeutic effect in gastrointestinal disorders.
Melatonin and the cardiovascular system:
The heart beats slower at night during sleep and our blood pressure is lower. When sleep patterns are impaired, these functions also deteriorate. The brain in people with high melatonin production can better control heart rate and blood pressure.
Мelatonin is antioxidantwhich protects cells from free radicals and slows down aging. Studies show that the incidence of vascular occlusion is higher in people with lower melatonin levels. At night, the formation of blood clots is much less with high levels of melatonin in the body. Reduces intraocular pressure.
Fighting cancer:
Breast and prostate cancer may be associated with low levels of melatonin in organism. Studies show that melatonin stimulates the immune system and protects against the toxic side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
